“Measurement is easy!” is presumptuous

The well-known algorithms like Shor, Grover or QPE measure their results in the computational basis (“Z-basis”). Manufacturers also typically only support measurements in the computational basis in their languages. However, the variational algorithms important to NISQ (such as VQE) require the evaluation of cost functions as measurements of expected values of observables that do not directly correspond to measurements in the computational basis. The talk will explain how measurement with arbitrary observables can be algorithmically regressed on measurements in the computational basis.
